“I wonder whether anything since then has been as good.” – Alan Lomax on Fred McDowell’s “Shake ‘Em On Down”
Moby’s massive hit 1999 album “Play” was dedicated to folk musicologist Alan Lomax, whose blues field recordings were highly influential to, and used heavily in the album’s development.
Alan Lomax found & recorded Jelly Roll Morton in Washington D.C. in 1938, convincing him to play his old brothel songs from Storyville, New Orleans, which were so raunchy that some were not released by the Library of Congress until 67 years later in 2005.
