When the band Count Basie was touring with fell apart in Kansas City, leaving him penniless and stranded, he got a job playing piano scores at a local silent movie theater, eventually fronting his own band which would achieve worldwide recognition.

Two tracks on John Coltrane’s landmark album “Giant Steps” were named after his wife and daughter, respectively; “Naima” and “Syeeda’s Song Flute”.
