“Yeah, the beginning of that bloody ‘Phantom [of the Opera]’ song is from ‘Echoes.’ DAAAA-da-da-da-da-da. I couldn’t believe it when I heard it. It’s the same time signature – it’s 12/8 – and it’s the same structure and it’s the same notes and it’s the same everything.” – Roger Waters, on 1987’s Phantom of the Opera stealing “Echoes”

One of the most influential harmonica players of the 20th century, Paul Butterfield was born into the blues. After studying under Muddy Waters, Little Walter and James Cotton during Chicago’s blues explosion of the 50s and 60s, the band backed Bob Dylan in an iconic moment in rock history at the Newport Folk Festival 1965 when Dylan “went electric”. The Butterfield Blues Band also played the inaugural 1969 Woodstock Festival!
