Was Janis Joplin at Woodstock?
Janis Joplin performed at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair in August 1969 with the Kozmic Blues Band. Though she later said she didn’t love her performance, Janis’ late-night set that Saturday, August 16 cemented her reputation as one of the defining voices of the 1960s counterculture.
When and Where did Janis Joplin die?
Janis Joplin died on October 4, 1970, at age 27, in the hotel room she was staying, at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood, California. Officially, she died of an accidental drug overdose.
She was staying at the hotel because it was close to the Sunset Sound Recorders studio where she and the Full tilt Boogie Band were recording Pearl. She had just listened to the instrumental track for “Buried Alive in the Blues” and was scheduled to record her vocals for that song the next day. When she didn’t arrive the following morning, her road manager John Cooke went to the hotel to find her dead. The track was left on Pearl as an instrumental.
The last words she ever recorded was “that’s it!” and her laugh at the end of her a capella track “Mercedes Benz”.
