The Blue Bird Inn was the hottest Jazz nightclub in Detroit, itself one of the hottest Jazz cities in the world.

Miles Davis had a stint in the house band, among a long line of incredible musicians to grace the house ensemble. Everyone who was ever anyone played The Blue Bird... among them, Charlie Parker, Elvin Jones, and Cannonball Adderly.

The jazz club was welcoming, but not particularly grandiose or pretentious. The stage wasn't too big or ornate, and neither was the building. It was  rather low-key, standing in stark contrast to the flashy, inauthentic downtown joints. It was that sort of neighborhood vibe that allowed the blossoming experimental Jazz music a safe place to try new things.  

The Blue Bird had an impressive run -- beginning in the first Jazz heyday of the 1930s and carrying the bright torch until fizzling out towards the late 1970s.
