Born David Robert Jones in 1947, Bowie was inspired to play saxophone as a teenager after hearing the sounds of London's West End. When he was just twenty two, his song "Space Oddity" became a smash hit, projecting the young singer onto a stratospheric path to super-stardom.
His first album,
The Man Who Sold The World became a slow-burning classic, followed swiftly by Hunky Dory & The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars. In 1982, Bowie released the massive hit album
Let's Dance, which sold some seven million copies -- with the title track going #1 in several countries. A then-unknown Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan played the lead guitar, and the album was produced by Nile Rodgers.
Defying mundane norms, Bowie's gender-bending fashion style gave rise to his elaborate stage costumes, incorporating face painted lightning bolts, monster hands, platform shoes, marionettes and much more.
