Johnny Winter's own record label, Blue Sky Records, was founded with the help of manager Steve Paul in 1973. Blue Sky albums included Johnny, Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer. 

Then after Chess Records collapsed in 1975, Johnny Winter jumped at the chance to record his childhood idol Muddy Waters. And in 1977, Muddy Waters recorded Hard Again with musicians Bob Margolin, Johnny Winter, Pinetop Perkins, Willie Big Eyes Smith, James Cotton and Charles Calmese. It won a Grammy that year. 

Blue Sky released Muddy's I'm Ready the following year, which also won a Grammy.
