On Christmas day in 1954, rising R&B star Johnny Ace was backstage for a short intermission, and in an effort to prove the gun he was playing with wasn’t loaded, put it to his temple and killed himself instantly. Big Mama Thornton witnessed the accident, saying his hair stood straight up when the gun fired.

Released in September of 1981, ABACAB became the band's second #1 album on the UK charts. It hit #7 on the US charts. The songs were originally listed in such a way that the first letter of each spelled ABACAB, so this became the name of the album. The final version of the album, however, featured the songs in a different arrangement!

The album cover was designed by Bill Smith, who had created an abstract design with colorful torn paper for a different project -- until the band spotted it and wanted to use it for their album. Originally, the album cover came in four different color variations. This artwork features the Blue/Grey album art.

The lineup for this album was Tony Banks on keyboards, Phil Collins on drums & vocals and Mike Rutherford on guitar & bass.
