It was 1968 and Stax had gone from top of the world to desperately fighting for its survival in a matter of months. Otis Redding, the labels biggest star, tragically died in a plane crash, and shortly after, Stax discovered that through a bad deal, Atlantic owned their entire catalog.
The label needed a big win, and fast. And Isaac Hayes answered the call of greatness. Hayes had long been a Stax studio musician and songwriter, but his second album Hot Buttered Soul catapulted the Memphis native to super-stardom. Containing just four searing, soul-drenched tracks, the album opens with a magical, riff-filled twelve minute epic 'Walk On By', followed by the sultry 'Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic'.
