Producer Lou Adler created the modern music festival with 1967’s Monterey Pop Festival, produced hit records for The Mamas & The Papas, Carol King, Cheech & Chong, and popular counter-culture movies The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cheech & Chong’s Up In Smoke, and the Monterey Pop documentary. He was inducted in to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

The Jazz Workshop in San Francisco opened in 1957 and quickly became a home for modern jazz thanks to legends like Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. For a brief moment it was one of the most important jazz rooms in the country. before it closed in the late 1960s.
