Founded in 1950 by polish immigrant brothers Leonard & Phil Chess, armed with the fresh talents of a young Muddy Waters, Chess Records would come to be called "the greatest independent American record label".

Mud's "I Can't Be Satisfied" was followed by "Rollin' Stone" -- an album that sold out the busy Chicago record stores in hours. Soon, Chess had a stable of hot talent with a bluesy new sound. Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley, and Willie Dixon's multi-talented abilities as a songwriter & performer made the label an unstoppable force for the rhythmic, driving music known as "the blues". But Chess would soon define Rock n Roll as well.

Etta James released her monster hit debut album, "At Last!" at Chess, and Muddy brought in a hot young guitarist by the name of Chuck Berry -- whose hits like "Johnny B. Goode" and "Riding Along in My Automobile" laid the groundwork for Rock n Roll.

Ultimately, having played a key role in defining what America sounded like, the label fizzled to a slow close sometime after the company was sold out in 1969.
