“You can call me old fashioned or behind the times but the one who got the money maker shaking all night was Elmore James.” – Tim Easton, “Elmore James”, 2018

Memphis-based Meteor Records rocked and rolled onto the scene in 1952 with an Elmore James recording. Looking to get Southern Blues and R&B into the hands of young listeners, the Meteor label found great talent in the area -- but failed to produce any big hits.

Little Milton Campbell recorded for Meteor. So did Rufus Thomas, who just five years later would earn great fame at Stax Records, which opened across town the year after Meteor Records closed. Lewie Steinberg played on Rufus' Meteor Records tracks, and went on to be the founding bassist of Booker T and the MGs.
