Held in 1967, the Monterey International Pop Music Festival hosted famed performances by Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Grateful Dead, The Butterfield Blues Band, Booker T and the MGs, that many acts household names almost overnight.
It was The Who's first U.S. performance, so Pete Townshend smashed his guitar in a famous finale. It was also Jimi Hendrix's American debut. Not to be outdone by Townshend, Hendrix set fire to his guitar "as a sacrifice" at the end of his performance.
