Despite threats of violence & boycotts, Mamie Smith broke the racially-charged “color barrier” when she first recorded for Okeh Records with a white band in February, 1920. Smith’s music was so wildly successful, she opened the door for more black musicians, and single-handedly ushered in the era of the classic women blues singers.

The Mississippi Blues Trail benefits from every sale of this merch! This official Mississippi Blues Trail shirt features a real photo of the Robert Johnson Mississippi Blues Trail Marker, framed in the state of Mississippi, with the Mississippi Blues Logo at the top. The marker honors the influential blues musician whose recordings became foundational to the blues canon. The marker was established as part of the Mississippi Blues Trail in 2007.
