Despite threats of violence & boycotts, Mamie Smith broke the racially-charged “color barrier” when she first recorded for Okeh Records with a white band in February, 1920. Smith’s music was so wildly successful, she opened the door for more black musicians, and single-handedly ushered in the era of the classic women blues singers.

There's little doubt that rock n roll was born with Memphis' Sun Records in the mid-1950s. Sam Phillips started recording the blues, and captured the voices of new talent from the area, like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. The rest was rockabilly history. This band shirt design features the famous yellow Sun Records logo, and it says "Where Rock n Roll was Born" and the year of Sun's founding, 1952. The bottom reads "Memphis, Tennessee".
