Buddy Guy’s ripping, wailing guitar style is as legendary as his polka-dot look and high-wire stagecraft—walking the bar, playing with his teeth, and tossing off licks behind his back. He’s a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee (2005), an eight-time GRAMMY winner with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and the all-time leader in Blues Music Awards (W.C. Handy Awards), with roughly three dozen-plus honors. Born to sharecroppers in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Buddy is one of the defining bluesmen of the modern era.

— Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin

On September 25, 1957, he boarded a train for Chicago—“92557” is etched on many of his guitars to mark the date. He didn’t go north to become a star so much as to be close to the blues he loved. His break came after he played following Otis Rush at the 708 Club; word reached Muddy Waters, who came down to hear him that night. Soon Buddy was working sessions for Chess Records, and the rest became blues history.

“Guitar legends do not come any better than Buddy Guy,” said Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones. Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan have called him a towering influence. Jimi Hendrix’s flamboyant one-handed, behind-the-back showmanship drew on Buddy’s example, and the oft-quoted line “Heaven is sitting at Buddy Guy’s feet while listening to him play guitar” captures how peers felt about his onstage power.

Across decades, Buddy has kept evolving—touring relentlessly, cutting charting albums, and mentoring younger players—while running his South Loop club, Buddy Guy’s Legends, a cornerstone of Chicago blues since 1989.
