Making official merch for Janis Joplin for the better part of a decade now, we’ve gotten a lot of questions about her car… so we put together this little article with all the fun details of Janis’ Porsche. The car is almost as iconic as the 60s singer herself!
In 1968 Janis Joplin bought a 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet, originally painted plain pearl white.
She bought the Porsche to celebrate her instant wealth from the massive success of Big Brother and the Holding Company’s “Cheap Thrills”, which was released just weeks earlier, and became a gold seller in just three days! Cheap Thrills eventually spent eight non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the charts.
She even wrote to her parents in Texas about the Porsche and her success,“Who’d have thought?!!”
The peal white paint job didn’t last long… She asked her friend and roadie Dave Richards to transform it into a rolling piece of psychedelic art. The result was a full hand-painted mural packed with bright colors, California landscapes, butterflies, stars, portraits, and symbols she loved.
Fans sometimes called it the “History of the Universe” Porsche.

It instantly became one of the most recognizable cars in rock. Janis drove it everywhere around San Francisco, and fans regularly left notes, flowers, and messages tucked under the wipers.
The most famous story tied to the Porsche happened in 1969, when it was stolen outside a venue. The thief tried to hide it by painting over the artwork with gray primer, but the Porsche was so distinctive that police found it quickly. After it was recovered, Janis had the custom paint restored.
After her death in 1970, the car stayed in the Joplin family. Her siblings kept it for decades and eventually had it professionally restored, keeping the original psychedelic design. It became a major exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where it was displayed for years and became one of the museum’s most photographed items.
In 2015 the Joplin family sold the Porsche at auction. It far exceeded expectations, selling for $1.76 million, a record price for that model.
Today it’s considered one of the most famous cars in music history, both for the artwork and for the way it captured Janis Joplin’s spirit: bold, bright, impossible to miss, and completely her own.
At Bluescentric, we’re honored to dream up and manufacture official Janis Joplin merchandise, on behalf of the estate.
