This article covers the bands that Janis was famously involved with & formed during her solo career
At Bluescentric, it is our great honor to dream up and manufacture t-shirts and merchandise on behalf of Janis Joplin’s estate. As such, we hear a lot of conversations and talk about Janis Joplin. So we wrote this little Janis trivia article to explain the various bands that Janis Joplin was involved in.
Big Brother and the Holding Company (1966-1968)
Janis Joplin is most closely tied to Big Brother and the Holding Company, the San Francisco band that launched her career. When she joined them in 1966, their raw, chaotic sound matched her voice perfectly.

The partnership produced the breakout album Cheap Thrills, which turned “Piece of My Heart” into a defining hit and made Joplin a national star.
Janis played her final show with them on December 1, 1968, seeking a more soulful, horn-driven sound
Kozmic Blues Band (1969)
After leaving Big Brother, she fronted two short-lived backing groups: the first was the Kozmic Blues Band, a horn-driven lineup she assembled for her album I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama! in 1969. That period marked a shift toward her soul and R&B influences.
It was the Kozmic Blues Band that accompanied Janis on her legendary Woodstock Festival performance.
She disbanded the group in 1969.
Full Tilt Boogie Band (1970)
Janis’ final group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band, became her most cohesive backing unit. With them, she recorded Pearl, the album that included “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Mercedes Benz.”
This is the band Janis traveled with on the famous Festival Express train tour across Canada.
The band ended with Janis’ death October 4th, 1970.
Bonus — The Grateful Dead
Bonus trivia points — While Janis Joplin wasn’t ever part of The Grateful Dead, they were friends & neighbors in San Francisco, and she dated founding Dead member Pigpen McKernan in the late 1960s. She did notably play around Frisco with the Dead as a guest in 1967, 1969 and 1970, and they jammed or rehearsed together several times.
While Janis Joplin played with several bands in her relatively short career, Big Brother and the Holding Company remains the one most people associate with her rise, sound & legacy.
