Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” Song Facts, Lyrics & Meaning

Tom Petty released “Free Fallin’” in 1989 on his first solo album, Full Moon Fever. Unlike most of Tom’s earlier work, this one wasn’t written with The Heartbreakers as a full band.

It sounds easygoing and optimistic like being on the open road. But the lyrics are a little more complex.

Petty talked about how it was inspired by living in Los Angeles, California… especially the strange mix of freedom and emptiness he saw there, and the lyrics moves through scenes of California culture.

Petty talked about “Free Fallin'”, he said it was about “that feeling of losing your footing.” Not really falling for real, but emotionally letting go. It’s about drifting without a clear plan, and understanding freedom doesn’t always feel the way you expect it to.

That contrast is why it works. The melody feels hopeful, while the lyrics are a little more unsettling.

Over time, “Free Fallin’” became one of his most recognizable songs, even though when he wrote it, Petty initially worried it was too simple!

But it ended up becoming his biggest solo hit and a regular in his live shows for the rest of his career.
