Etta James At Last

Her signature recording, “At Last,” became a timeless standard and helped secure her place in music history, but her legacy stretches well before and beyond that one song.

She was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles in 1938. It was famed bandleader Johnny Otis (father of soulful artist Shuggie Otis) who suggested flipping her given name around and shortening it for a stage name. And so, James-etta became Etta James

She began singing young & got her start professionally in her teens, landing her first hit in 1955 with “Dance with Me, Henry,” recorded when she was just 16.

She eventually landed at the famed Chess Records in Chicago, where along with a string section, she recorded the landmark album, “At Last”. Over the years she became known for a string of hits including “I’d Rather Go Blind,” and “Something’s Got a Hold on Me.”

She had such a dynamic range that eras and different songs could show off a completely different side of her voice. It could go from absolute elegant to explosive at will.

Her ability to cross genres made her a bridge between early R&B, soul, and modern pop.

Etta James died on January 20, 2012, at the age of 73. Her influence still runs deep in music, and her recordings remain some of the most emotional ever put on tape.
