In so many ways, Son House was the most living embodiment of the blues. Born in the rural Mississippi Delta, House learned to play guitar at Dockery Farm under the great Charley Patton. House was both a preacher and a bluesman — his life and music were torn between the dichotomy of religion and “the devil’s music”. He was an inspiration for Robert Johnson, and had a whole second act in the 1960s folk music resurgence.

A legendary Delta blues guitarist, Son House’s music possessed a raw, impassioned playing style that echoed the hardships of his life in the Delta. His haunting vocals and intense slide guitar techniques defined the essence of early blues, influencing generations of musicians.
