The phrase “heavy metal thunder” in Steppenwolf’s 1968 hit “Born to Be Wild” is one of the earliest uses of the term “heavy metal” in a musical context — predating the musical genre itself by about two years.

Big Mama Thornton first released “Hound Dog” in 1952. Three years later, Elvis’ Sun Studio cover became a worldwide smash hit.
