The phrase “heavy metal thunder” in Steppenwolf’s 1968 hit “Born to Be Wild” is one of the earliest uses of the term “heavy metal” in a musical context — predating the musical genre itself by about two years.

Classically trained Lynyrd Skynyrd pianist Billy Powell was working as a roadie for the band for two years when he played piano at a sound check and they hired him on the spot.
