Though Howlin’ Wolf had a huge hit with his 1956 song “Smokestack Lightnin’”, he said he’d been playing it since the 1930s, when he and Charley Patton (father of the blues) performed in small Mississippi Delta towns.

Howlin’ Wolf was actually partially responsible for the founding of Sun Records in 1952. After founder Sam Phillips had to send Wolf to Chess Records in Chicago because he didn’t have his own label, he started Sun Records — and changed music forever.
