Saxophonist Pharoah Sanders joined John Coltrane’s band in 1964 until the Jazz legend’s death in 1967, after which Sanders also recorded with Alice Coltrane, John’s wife.

Janis Joplin’s cover of Big Mama Thornton’s “Ball and Chain” at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival helped solidify her reputation a star.
