When the band Count Basie was touring with fell apart in Kansas City, leaving him penniless and stranded, he got a job playing piano scores at a local silent movie theater, eventually fronting his own band which would achieve worldwide recognition.

Producer John Simon produced The Band’s first two albums — even playing the tuba on a couple tracks.
