The Grateful Dead’s husband-wife members Donna & Keith Godchaux were early dead heads, and joined the band in 1971 simply by asking. Keith was a classically trained pianist & had played along to Dead records at home, Donna sang backup vocals. They were a perfectly timed addition to the group.

The Band’s Robbie Robertson said “I was noodling on a Martin guitar, and I looked inside,” the guitar was manufactured in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, which sparked the idea for “The Weight”, with the opening line “I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin’ ‘bout half-past dead.”
