The Rolling Stones had a hit with their 1969 cover of Robert Johnson’s “Love In Vain”, which was presumably in public domain. 26 years later in 1995, the executor of Johnson’s estate sued The Stones and the publisher ABKCO for infringement Johnson’s copyright, and won.

Tom Petty was posthumously honored with a Doctorate of Music from the University of Florida — where he once worked as a groundskeeper before his music career.
