According to blues legend Bessie Smith’s son, when a car dealer snidely told her there was ‘no way a negro woman could afford a Cadillac’, she went to her bank, withdrew enough money to buy a house, threw it in the salesman’s face, told him to ‘f___ himself’ and drove away in the car.

When The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones died at 27 years old, The Who’s Pete Townshend and The Doors’ Jim Morrison each published poems about him, and Jimi Hendrix dedicated a song to him on TV. Hendrix & Morrison would both soon join the 27 club, with Morrison dying exactly 2 years to-the-day after Jones.
