Three guitarists, Peter Albin, James Gurley and Chuck Jones, formed Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1965.

The psychedelic music scene was coming to a boil in San Fransisco and with the addition of Jazz drummer David Getz and Janis Joplin with bluesy vocals, BBHC's experimental acid rock ideas exploded onto the American music scene with a firey performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, and their wildly popular 1968 album Cheap Thrills.
