Big Brother and the Holding Company rocketed onto the American popular music scene with a stunning performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Unfortunately, the performance wasn't filmed, so BBHC agreed to perform again the next day. That footage of Janis Joplin's raw vocals and stunning vulnerability over a raw, jazzy psychedelic groove captured the world's imagination.

The next year, BBHC followed up with their debut album, Cheap Thrills. Featuring acid-washed hits like "Ball and Chain", "Summertime", and "Piece of my Heart", Cheap Thrills became the defacto soundtrack for the Summer of Love.
