Elvis Presley’s first recording was made in 1953 when he walked into Sun Records at age 18, and paid $4 to “record a song for his mom’s birthday” (who didn’t own a record player). He played “My Happiness”, and then left the only copy at a friends house, who kept it until it was auctioned in 2015 for $300,000.

At the pinnacle of Bob Dylan's career, a 1966 motorcycle crash left him unable to perform. So in 1967, Bob and his backing band, The Hawks (soon to be The Band), began playing music in their homes around Woodstock, New York -- including Big Pink, the house The Band had rented (at $125 per month).

It would take eight grueling years before Columbia Records would finally release what would become the iconic Americana album The Basement Tapes in 1975.
