Parliament’s superfunky 1969 song “Everything Is On The One” is actually a reference to James Brown’s method of putting a heavy emphasis on the first (ONE) beat — a trick George Clinton learned after hiring Brown’s former bassist Bootsy Collins.

The Jazz Workshop in San Francisco opened in 1957 and quickly became a home for modern jazz thanks to legends like Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. For a brief moment it was one of the most important jazz rooms in the country. before it closed in the late 1960s.
