Despite threats of violence & boycotts, Mamie Smith broke the racially-charged “color barrier” when she first recorded for Okeh Records with a white band in February, 1920. Smith’s music was so wildly successful, she opened the door for more black musicians, and single-handedly ushered in the era of the classic women blues singers.

This official Mississippi Blues Trail shirt features a real photo of the Po’ Monkey’s Mississippi Blues Trail Marker, framed in the state of Mississippi, with the Mississippi Blues Logo at the top. The marker is located in Merigold, Mississippi, and commemorates the iconic juke joint known for its role in preserving late-night Delta blues traditions. The site was added to the Mississippi Blues Trail in 2010.
