In 1950, Elmore James was working as a repairman for Willard and Lillian McMurry, who opened a record label and recorded his song "Dust My Broom", which went on to become a smash hit. 

By the time Trumpet Records closed five years later in in 1956, Trumpet had recorded dozens of other sides by blues greats like Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Milton, and Arthur Crudup.
