Recorded at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in the fall of 1966, Etta James had to be convinced by FAME's Rick Hall to even sing "Tell Mama". It was a response song to Clarence Carter's "Tell Daddy".

Released as a single the following October, with I'd Rather Go Blind as the B Side, "Tell Mama" was a hit! Peaking at Number 10 on the R&B chart. Janis Joplin quickly & famously adopted James' tune into her repertoire.
