The Famous Flames was a vocal group formed by Brown's longtime cohort Bobby Byrd, who invited Brown to join in '54. A little more than two years later, and having penned several smash hits, James Brown was leading the group. 

Brown's time with the band proved to be a fertile environment to grow his musical prowess & unique stage presence, which would springboard the singer into decades of super-stardom.
