The song was actually recorded in one emotional take. According to George Clinton, he told Hazel to play the solo as if he had just learned his mother had died — and then learned she was alive again.

Hazel poured everything he had into that performance, creating a piece that sounds like grief, release, and rebirth all at once. In turn, that solo made him famous.

The meaning of the title itself — Maggot Brain — isn’t literally explained in the lyrics (there aren’t any lyrics aside from the opening talking), but Clinton later said it symbolized “the rotten part of your mind you have to get rid of,” like a kind of spiritual cleansing. In fact, the album’s opening monologue talks about the death of a brother “buried in the mass grave of your soul”.

Over the years, “Maggot Brain” has taken on near-mythic status. Fans describe it as a eulogy or a prayer, or better yet, a psychedelic blues confession. 

Hazel’s solo has been used everywhere, film, TV, sampled in hip-hop, etc, which is why it’s often cited as one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded.

Part of the legend comes from how it was recorded. Clinton isolated Hazel’s guitar in the mix, stripping almost everything else away. There was originally a full-band track underneath, but Clinton muted it, leaving Hazel alone in a kind of musical spotlight. 

What you hear on the album is essentially the guitarist’s raw, unfiltered reaction to Clinton’s emotional prompt. It was a once-in-a-lifetime performance that feels like someone tearing open their chest and letting their soul out.
