Chess Records experienced a rare failure by signing a young Buddy Guy in the 1960s, but refusing to release his wild, guitar-driven music — until they saw Jimi Hendrix explode in unprecedented popularity by playing guitar the way he’d learned from Buddy.

According to Miles Davis, on a cross-country road trip with Charlie Mingus and Max Roach, Mingus declares he’d rather crash a car than hit an animal that ran in front of him — which was swiftly tested on that same trip when Mingus drove Max’s car into a fire hydrant to avoid a dog.
