The phrase “heavy metal thunder” in Steppenwolf’s 1968 hit “Born to Be Wild” is one of the earliest uses of the term “heavy metal” in a musical context — predating the musical genre itself by about two years.

Jimi Hendrix performed The Fillmore on New Year’s Day, 1969 (and, technically, 1970). He played Auld Lang Syne at midnight.
