Before being discovered, Howlin’ Wolf hosted a radio show in KWEM in West Memphis, Arkansas where his house band included Matt “Guitar” Murphy (later of Blues Brothers Fame), Junior Parker and Willie Johnson.

“La Bamba” legend Ritchie Valens was terrified of flying after a mid-air collision over his grade school killed his best friend, and he vowed never to fly. But in 1959, Valens reluctantly boarded a flight with Buddy Holly that crashed and killed them both.
