The Rolling Stones had a hit with their 1969 cover of Robert Johnson’s “Love In Vain”, which was presumably in public domain. 26 years later in 1995, the executor of Johnson’s estate sued The Stones and the publisher ABKCO for infringement Johnson’s copyright, and won.

“My dear sister, Hope you are okay. I will be home soon. Tell all [hello]. I haven’t wrote Louis. Sorry but haven’t had time. Tell mother I wrote you. Yours truly, Robert Johnson” – Postcard to Johnson’s sister from Dallas during his second & final recording session
