Cops jailed Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, and Norman Granz in 1955 for planning to perform for a racially integrated audience. They got out on bail in time to play the show, audience none the wiser, and the “gambling” charged were dropped.

The success of Ike Turner’s “Rocket 88”, recorded at Sam Phillips’ Memphis Recording Service, gave Philips the ability to open Sun Records in 1952.
