Some 40 years after an inmate at Parchman Farm Prison in Mississippi named James Carter was recorded singing a work song, it was used in the opening of the 2000 movie “O! Brother Where Art Thou?”. When Carter received a $20,000 royalty check, he didn’t even remember singing the tune.

Official Aretha Franklin. Aretha's iconic flipped bob hairstyle stands tall among her decades' of iconic looks and styles. Part of the reason it was so impactful was because it was the first good look the world got at a young Aretha.

Franklin sported the bob in a 1968 Atlantic Records promo photo shortly after her smash breakout "I Never Loved A Man" album release.
